Public health in Indonesia


The history of the development of public health in Indonesia started since the reign of 16th-century Netherlands. Public health in Indonesia at that time started with the efforts of eradicating smallpox and cholera are very afraid of society at that time. Cholera in Indonesia in 1927, and in 1837 eltor cholera outbreak occurred in Indonesia, then in 1948 smallpox entry to Indonesia via Singapore and began to grow in Indonesia. So the cholera outbreak originated from the then Government of the Netherlands at that time doing public health efforts.

However, in other areas of public health, in 1807 at the time of the reign of Governor-general Daendels, initiated shaman baby in childbirth practices. This effort is carried out in order to decrease infant mortality rates are high at the time. In 1851 the Javanese doctor school founded by Dr. Bosch, the fist civilian and military health care, and doctors in Indonesia Bleeker. This school is famous with the name STOVIA (School Tot Oplelding Van Indiche Arsten) or school for the education of native doctor. In 1913, founded the school in Surabaya, the second doctor by the name of NIAS (the Nederland Indische Arsten School). In 1927, Stovia turned into medical school and finally since the establishment of the University of Indonesia in 1947 turned into Faculty of medicine University of Indonesia. Both the school the doctor has a very big role in producing doctors who develop public health Indonesia.

In November 1967, conducted a seminar to discuss and formulate integrated public health program in accordance with the conditions and the ability of the people of Indonesia. At that time discussed the concept of clinics conducted by Dr. Achmad Dipodilogo, which refers to the concept of Bandung and Bekasi. The conclusions of this seminar was the second public health system which is composed of type A, B, and C by using the results of the seminar. Department of Health prepared a master plan integrated health services in Indonesia. Finally in 1968 the national health work meeting, proposed that the Clinic is an integrated health care system, which was later developed by the of Government  (Ministry of health) became a center of Community health services (Clinics). The clinic agreed as a unit of the Ministry of health provides curative and preventive services in an integrated, comprehensive and easy to reach, in a region or part of a sub sub Vice town or district. Principal activities of clinics include:
1) maternal and child health
2) family planning
3) Nutrition
4) environmental health
5) Infectious Disease Prevention
6 community health Outreach)
7) Treatment
8) Community Health Care
9) health nutrition
10) health school
11) mental health Efforts
12) Laboratory
13) record keeping and reporting.
